New York, NY, USA

Online Contest:
Zip A Zipper
Online Division I - Ages 11 - 14 (Middle School)
Team Leader: Jaclyn Maricle
Team Members: 17
Invitations: 0

What we're studying:
6th Grade: Ecosystems
7th Grade: Chemistry
8th Grade: Evolution

Our Team Leader's favorite quote:
"Where is the duct tape?" - Jaclyn

"Somewhere something incredible is waiting to be known." - Carl Sagan

Why we think we should win:
We work really hard on our machine, and we love the challenge of it! Students voluntarily give up two lunch and recess periods a week to work on the machine, and senior members give up an even bigger privilege – going out to lunch! New York City classrooms don’t have much extra storage, so we built our machine with limited space and resources. Most of our materials are found or recycled. Students do the design, planning, and building on their own.

Suggestion for next year's challenge:
- Pour and deliver a glass of water

- Turn on the lights in a room with at least two switches

Welcome to the I.S. 289 GEARS: "Rube Goldberg Goes to Hogwarts"

Our Step List

1. There is a pulley system set up through a hole in the bookcase. Zola "casts a spell," and pulls the string of a pulley system with a wand.
2. A pulley system lifts a wood block
3. This releases the pull-back car, carrying Harry and Ron
4. The pull-back car hits the turnstile
5. The turnstile spins, releasing the marbles from the funnel
6. Marbles drop through a hole in the bookcase and onto a lever made of a basket and a spool of ribbon, hopefully avoiding Malfoy
7. The lever lifts a mat
8 The mat drops the "snitch" (ball) down a tube
9. The "snitch" passes Dumbledore and hits a turnstile
10. The turnstile spins, knocking over a weight precariously perched on the bottom shelf of the bookcase
11. The weight pulls a piece of radiator pipe from the top of the bookcase by a string
12. The radiator pipe is attached to the zipper by a string. When it falls, it pulls the zipper of Rube's backpack. The zipper is zipped!
