What we're studying:
Gateway to Engineering- The design process which includes teamwork, research, problem solving, using simple machines, creativity, "tweeking", evaluating, and of course having fun doing this!

Why we think we should win:
We worked really hard and didn't give up even when a 12 inch unexpected snowstorm took a workday away from us. Our teacher stayed after the team had to go home on the Thursday before the deadline to video tape the final run since we couldn't get into the school on Friday or Monday. The janitors were kind enough to start the machine and cheer as Mrs Fairman video taped it. We hope that's OK, since we didn't want all of our hard work not to be turned in. We also used recyclable materials and were creative in making our Rube Goldberg Machine out of many simple machines.

Suggestion for next year's challenge:
Maybe the challenge could be to pour a bowl of cereal.


Welcome to the Northwest Middle School Knight's Rube Goldberg Machine made out of recyclable materials! All materials, except the glue and tape of course, are being reused. Note : the large ball bearings came from old computer mice!

Our Step List

Small ball bearing A goes down paper towel holder B through binder spring C around foam insulation screw D down PVC elbow tubes E and into old top half of soda bottle F. Then it goes down used PVC pipe ramp G and into pudding cup H. This causes the plastic ribbon holder pulley I to knock down large ball bearing J into plastic coffee cup K. It then rolls down foam insulation ramp L and onto wood scrap lever M which pulls pulley N thereby releasing another large ball bearing O out of lid P and down foam insulation ramp Q. The large ball bearing continues through used toilet paper roll R, drops into a small half of an old water bottle S, down foam insulation ramp T, and onto an old wood scrap lever U. This causes a spool pulley V to release large ball bearing W down part of a vacuum cleaner hose X that drops into tiny cream container lever Y. Plastic spoon Z is pulled which turns the old film wheel (a) making it drop small ball bearing (b) into Parmesan cheese cup lever (c). Plastic ribbon holder (d) rolls down wood scrap ramp (e) and pushes used domino (f) onto tongue depressor lever (g). Old wood scrap pulley (h) hits used marble (i) down cut insulation tube/PVC pipe ramp (j), into cardboard tube screw (k), down PVC pipe (l), and into old half of an old soda bottle (m). Tongue depressor lever (n) releases cardboard ribbon holder pulley (o). Fishing line weight (p) knocks small ball bearing (q) down plastic straw ramp (r), down foam insulation ramp (s), and around slush lid screw (t). It goes down pieces or cardboard zig zag ramp (u), down PVC pipe ramp (v), knocking over wine cork hammer (w) onto used nail (x) which nails it into scrap piece of foam (y). If you don't want a big mess, be sure to use items that are already used!
