What we're studying:
Simple Machines, Physics, and transfers of energy

Why we think we should win:
We believe our machine shows the true purpose of Rube Goldberg. While some other machines went out and purchased many different absurd materials, we only used everyday items we found in our houses, which is the true spirit of Rube: repurposing everyday items.

Suggestion for next year's challenge:
Open a can of soda.

Favorite Rube Goldberg video:

This machine utilized the potentials energy of traveling down a bookcase. It uses each "floor" of the book case to pack in as many steps as possible. The machine begins with a marble being dropped into a tube, and ends with the umbrella being opened on a chair.

Our Step List

.) The marble goes into and through the tubing at the top.
.) The marble bounces off of the miniature trampoline.
.) The miniature trampoline bounces the marble into a funnel.
.) The marble hits a domino trail.
.) The domino trail knocks over a hanging wheel.
.) The hanging wheel hits a domino.
.) The domino hits and pushes over a small piece of black foam.
.) The piece of black foam hits a marble.
.) The marble falls down the block with the hole, and exits through the other side.
.) The marble hits a domino.
.) The domino hits a yo-yo.
.) The yo-yo swings and hits a wooden block on the level below it.
.) The wooden block hits a bicycle style wheel.
.) The bicycle style wheel hits a domino.
.) The dominos knock over a hanging wheel.
.) The hanging wheel knocks over another domino trail.
.) The domino trail knocks a weight attached to a string over the edge of the bookcase.
.) The weight on the string pulls another domino off the machine.
-28.) The pulled domino releases a marble that goes through a run containing 10 transfers of energy, or steps.
.) The marble knocks over a domino trail.
.) The Domino trail knocks a weighted string off the edge.
.) The weighted string pulls another weight off the edge.
.) The second weight pulls support from under a hammer.
.) The hammer falls on a lever.
.) The lever's end pushes up, knocking over a tennis ball.
.) The tennis ball hits a miniature trampoline.
.) The miniature trampoline relaxes then contracts, bouncing the tennis ball back.
.) The tennis ball hits a cup.
.) The cup moves backwards, hitting dominoes over.
.) The dominoes knock a weighted string off the edge.
.) The weighted string pulls down on a lever, causing the lever's end to go up.
.) The levers end pushes another lever up, causing the second lever's end to go down.
.) The second lever releases a marble.
.) The marble knocks over a domino trail.
.) The domino trail knocks a weighted string off the edge.
.) The weighted string pulls another weight off the edge.
.) The second weight pulls a third weight off the edge.
.) The third weight pulls down on a lever.
.) The lever presses down on the button of the umbrella, opening it.
