Erase A Chalkboard
Online Division I - Ages 11 - 14 (Middle School)
What we're studying:
SystemsWhy we think we should win:
We think we should win since we have a unique design that incorporates some of the concepts we've learned in our Systems unit, that effectively yet inefficiently accomplishes a simple task!
Our Step List
Step #1: A pile of CDs sitting on a visor is knocked down by an intervention (hand), causing the CDs to make their way down onto a table top.
Step #2: The falling of the CDs causes a weighted can to be pulled up.
Step #3: On its way upward, the weight of the can allows a water bottle filled with water to tip at just the right angle, so as to empty out into a funnel.
Step #4: Into the funnel and travelling down a transparent tube, the water collects into a can that is fixed onto the effort arm of a first class lever. The weight of the can raises the load arm of the lever, allowing a toy car sitting at its end to “drive” down its length.
Step #5: The toy car, attached to a small block of wood, is knocked down, releasing the ball on one end of the Newton’s Cradle that sat on top of it.
Step #6: The Newton’s Cradle’s motion triggers a set of “road sign” dominos to fall.
Step #7: The last domino in the set falls off the table top, pulling the seat belt buckle off the table and onto the floor.
Step #8: As the seat belt buckle falls onto the floor, it causes a wheel to turn.
Step #9: The wheel turns pulling a set of “stop lights” off the chalkboard, releasing the windshield wiper blade.
Step #10: The windshield wiper blade slides down the wire, erasing the chalkboard and completing the 2015 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest task!
