This machine draws its inspiration from our love of New York City. New York City is a unique cityscape with iconic rectangular buildings. In addition to this, we observe a pattern of demolition and reconstruction around our school so we decided to create this theme in response to the everyday occurrences unique to the Browning community. Therefore as can be observed, the steps utilize weights and tools to symbolize the construction, tracks and cars to symbolize the subway trains, and the cubic structures to symbolize the city. The materials used for this machine, in line with the spirit of Rube Goldberg, are materials that were to be thrown away from the construction. All the cubes were left over from a Robotics program last year, everything else were taken from either the Science lab, Tech lab or the Art department. We pulled our creativity from the constraint of using only what we have to create something special that we could be proud of.

Our Step List

1.) Hammer swings
2.) Hits tape that is attached to a meter stick
3.) The force on the tape causes the meter stick to drop
4.) The stick pushes on a string that is attached to a weight
5.) The weight falls from the top of a cube
6.) The weight swings like a pendulum
7.) It hits a weight sitting at a lower height
8.) The force of impact causes the weight to drop. This weight is attached to a string
9.) The weight dropping activates a pulley
10.) The pulley lifts a ramp
11.) The ramp causes the ball to roll down ramp
12.) The ball hits button which acts like a switch
13.) This starts a motor which starts a gear
14.) The spinning motion of the motor pulls zip tie which is stopping a marble from rolling down due to the force of gravity
15.) The marble rolls through a ramp
16.) The marble drops down tube
17.) At the bottom of the tube is a pushcar, the marble hits a button to activate pushcar
18.) The push car then pushes a weight
19.) The weight drops and activates a makeshift pulley
20.) The string pulls a board that is stopping a weight from falling down
21.) The weight drops due to the force of gravity
22.) It hits a balance
23.) The balance shift causes a car to roll down a ramp
24.) The car causes an extra weight to drop onto a trigger
25.) The trigger pushes a button that activates the pushcar
26.) The pushcar hits the button on the umbrella opening the umbrella
