Online Contest:
Open An Umbrella
Online Division II - Ages 14 - 18 (High School)
Team Leader: Jenna Nikles
Team Members: 3
Invitations: 0

What we're studying:
We are all students from sophomore to senior year, and we study everything from chemistry, environmental science, physics, biology and more. We have combined all our areas of expertise to produce this great machine!

Our Team Leader's favorite quote:
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." Albert Einstein

Why we think we should win:
We live in a very troubled time, and we need a superhero to save us! Today's superheroes, however, don't wear capes, but they do wear lab coats. Our machine was built using all fields of science and numerous scientific concepts, so how can we not win with a bunch of superheroes on our team!

Suggestion for next year's challenge:
Put a baseball cap on a head

Favorite Rube Goldberg video:

This machine takes you through a journey of superhero-sized proportions! From Superman flying across a city landscape to Batman on his Bat-boat (And even lasers!) this machine will entertain you from start to opening umbrella!

Our Step List

1. Superman is released and hits a golf ball
2. The golf ball travels down a track and knocks a weighted cart off the table
3. The weighted cart pulls on the joystick of a controller for a robotic arm which turns on a laser pointer
4. The laser pointer pops a balloon with a golf ball inside of it releasing the golf ball
5. The golf ball lands in a cup which pulls out a stopper for the airplane
6. The airplane travels down its track and hits large wooden dominoes
7. The dominoes topple and land on a pair of scissors cutting a piece of string
8. A see-saw is released allowing a golf ball to roll down a track
9. The golf ball lands in a cup in a pulley system with a stuffed bear named captain counterweight, causing the cup to drop onto a battery and knock it into place
10. The string connected to batman and his bat-boat winds up and pulls batman into a board connected to a switch, turning on the switch
11. The switch turns on a motor which starts a lift that rolls a bouncy ball onto a track
12. The bouncy ball hits a stopper blocking the baseball and releases the baseball
13. The baseball rolls down the track and hits the shovel
14. The shovel falls over and lands on the umbrella, opening it
